What to look for when hiring a B2B marketing agency

Most buyers judge marketing agencies on the wrong things — size, awards, the logos on the wall. What actually predicts whether the engagement works is harder to see on a credentials page, and worth the effort to look for.
Start with specialization over size. An agency that understands your industry and the way your business sells — long cycles, multiple stakeholders, technical products, high-value decisions — will grasp your situation quickly and avoid the costly mistakes a generalist makes while learning on your account.
Then ask who actually does the work once the contract is signed, because agencies often win with senior people and deliver with junior ones. The honest answer to that single question tells you a great deal about the year ahead.
Look for proof of real work — case studies and evidence of execution close to your own situation, rather than a services list wrapped in a polished pitch. Pay attention to how the agency talks about results too. The ones worth trusting are honest that marketing cannot be guaranteed, because it is one variable inside a much larger commercial equation.
Notice whether they think in systems or in deliverables. The good ones want to understand your whole commercial picture — how you sell, what happens to a lead, how marketing and sales connect — before proposing anything. And watch whether they will push back on you, since an agency willing to challenge a brief usually improves your thinking rather than simply following instructions.
Finally, trust the fit. A relationship that already feels strained during the courtship rarely improves under real pressure.
